| Landmines: The Final Harvest of the Millennium September 24, 1999 State of the World Forum, in conjunction with the Roots for Peace, is hosting the Opening Night Gala of its Fifth Annual Conference on October 1, 1999 at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco. State of the World Forum Co-Chair Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan will be delivering the Keynote Address on the topic of "Creating a Culture of Peace." In addition to her hard work to keep peace at the forefront of the international agenda, Queen Noor is championing the landmines issue in the footprints of the late Princess Diana. Honoring the final harvest of the millennium, Her Majesty will be describing the vision to remove the seeds of destruction from the earth and create economically viable land. She states: "One light step and a land mine detonates, regardless whether it is a boot of a soldier or the sandal of a child." Confirmed speakers on the landmines issue include Ambassador Donald Steinburg, President Clintons Special Representative for Global Humanitarian Demining; Kim Campbell, former Prime Minister of Canada (1993) and Head of the Council of World Womens Leaders; Robert O. Muller, President of the Vietnam Veterans Association of America and Co-Recipient of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize; Jerry White, Executive Director, Landmine Survivor Network; and General Robert Gard, 3-Star General and Former President of the Monterey Institute for International Studies. Napa Valley Vintners will also be participating in the evening festivities and celebrating food, wine and the arts. State of the World Forum serves as a global educational network of leaders representing grass-roots organizations, academia, business, government and youth to analyze the most fundamental issues facing humanity in the 21st Century. Emerging from this deep dialogue are Strategic Initiatives, transforming dialogue into action. The Forum, which works to promote peace worldwide, is proud to join in the movement to raise awareness about the landmine issue. Roots of Peace is a fund of the Marin Community Foundation and a non-profit organization dedicated to returning demined land into productive agricultural use and to raising public awareness about the magnitude of this issue. The generosity of the wine industryrepresenting the bounty of the soil has resulted in the first successful United Nations Associations Adopt-a-Minefield partnership in Dragalic, Croatia. Roots of Peace has earned the support of 150 Napa Valley Vintners and dedicated to transforming the earth from mines to vines. Proceeds from the evening will enable Her Majesty and the King Hussein Foundation to promote peace in the Middle East. |
