"Conservatives claimed that free markets would lead to greater growth, growth to less poverty, less poverty to more democracy. Well, as this discussion reflects, we now know better: from the suites of Davos to the streets of Seattle, there is a growing consensus that globalization must now be reshaped to reflect values broader than simply the freedom of capital and the rights of corporations.”

John J. Sweeney,

President of the AFL-CIO

The mission of Equal Access is to utilize digital satellite broadcasting and information technology to build global learning networks and sustainable communities. Equal Access has successfully spun off to become its own organization, Global Equal Access in January 2002. The Forum continues to partner with Global Equal Access, UNDP and the UN Foundation in its projects in Nepal, where work has begun to enable existing educational and development initiatives to deliver much-needed information to broad audiences in under-served populations; and in Afghanistan, where with the support of the Hewlett Foundation, initial research is being conducted on how best to educate Afghan girls in remote areas.
