INTERNATIONAL WATER SECURITY POLICY ACTION GROUP
Concurrent
projects being undertaken to forward the goals of this program:
Examination
of International Watersheds
The
bulk of our International Water Security PAG will focus on the
examination of trans-boundary watersheds. The project looks to
identify a list of best practices to cross-border water management,
including how to educate and involve local communities on sustainable
watershed development, and how to develop a productive relationship
between consumers, water service providers, and government. The
primary goal of the project will be to make recommendations for
sustainable water management practices that will help ensure that
all people have adequate access to water at fair and affordable
rates. This project will begin in Mozambique with the assistance
of Prime Minister Pascoal Mocumbi, a Co-Chair of the Commission
on Globalisation. Prime Minister Mocumbi has appointed Mr. Roberto
White, the Minister of Public Works and Housing to be his point
of contact with this project. Skills and knowledge developed in
Mozambique will be applied to other international watersheds.
South
African Water Forum
This
conference will focus on water distribution issues and cross-border
water management practices for Southern Africa. The conference
will take place in South Africa, where there have been several
discussions with the Minister of Water Affairs in South Africa
regarding scheduling. This event will be tied to the International
Water Security PAG beginning in Mozambique, with specific regard
to cross-border management practices and plans to include representation
from both governments at the conference.
Latin American Water Activist Network
In
partnership with organizations in the US and Bolivia, State of
the World Forum is in the process of helping to create a network
of water activists in Latin America. This regional, Spanish language
network will eventually allow water activists and organizations
to learn from and support one another in their struggle to ensure
the universal provision of water at fair and affordable rates.
Water Primer
A
water primer is being developed as an educational tool to help
inform individuals in non-technical language about where water
comes from and how it gets to them. It will present a balanced
view of the principal water issues that citizens around the world
should understand. It will not advocate one solution over others
but inform the reader about the water challenges facing us in
the 21st century. The primer will be initially published in English
and Spanish, and will be made available in both print and electronic
forms.
