Community Building Meeting II
August 20th - 25th, 2001 - Rio de Janiero & Sao Paolo, Brazil

The second Community Building meeting and Commission exploratory trip occurred in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo from August 20-25, 2001. Brazil was chosen as the location for an initial Commission visit to Latin America because of the country's economic and political importance in the region and because Thais Corral, a member of the Commission's Interim Executive Committee, offered to assist in organizing a Community Building meeting in Rio de Janeiro. The role of civil society in Brazil's development has been significant over the past 20 years. The opportunity to learn more about the issues and concerns of the region through the experience of academics, NGO leaders, and activist organizations was compelling and provided significant value to the overall diversity of views within the Commission.
